Decent work is a key form of social justice; and the right to work is a fundamental right that affects everyone's daily life and lifetime, and every citizen has the right to a decent job and free choice of labor.
Youth in Mongolia are key to the current and future inclusive economic and social development. Yet, economic growth over the past years has not translated into sufficient gains in decent and productive employment for young women and men in a rapidly changing world of work. Even prior to the COVID-19 crisis, young people in Mongolia faced significant challenges in the labour market. The youth unemployment rate (15-24 years) was estimated at 25.3 per cent in 2019, compared to a national unemployment rate of 10 per cent. Furthermore, 19.7 percent of youth were not in employment, education or training.1 Job disruptions as well as uncertainties about their future have affected youth not only negatively with regard to income, aspirations and mental health, they also left them vulnerable to precarious working conditions. Many young people are not aware of their rights to and at work (e.g. hours of work). When young people enter into employment, they often face low quality jobs and informal employment.
Therefore, Decent Work for Youth Network was established in 2018 with the support of the ILO, in order to build decent work relations in Mongolia at every workplace, to promote youth employment, to organize a national campaign to influence policy, and to improve cooperation between the parties. Hence, effective cooperation and active participation of the government, employers, trade unions and civil society organizations is very important for building a decent work relationship in every workplace.
Currently, our network includes 17 governmental and non-governmental organizations working in the field of youth development, employment and labor rights; and we are pleased to announce that YOUTHinc. - The Young Mongolian Professionals Association has become the Coordinating Organization of the Mongolia Decent Work for Youth Network from 2021 for the next two years.
